'Gulliver's Travels' is arguably one of the greatest books of all time. It is a timeless classic that everyone has heard of the world over. The book has never been out of print since its first publication (That's 291 years in print). It has had many tv and cinema adaptations with some being critically acclaimed and others being, well, awful. For someone to write a book that is still going strong after 291 years is surely an astounding achievement.
Swift was born in 1667 in Dublin. Swift's father died 7 months before he was born and his mother returned to England. He was left in the care of his uncle. His uncle sent him to study at Kilkenny College where he would have studied many such subjects as Literature and Public Speaking. His time in Kilkenny College shaped his future as he became a great writer at a young age. He moved to Trinity College where he received his B.A. Unfortunately his masters degree was interrupted by troubles in ireland and he moved over to his mother in England. Swift's time in England did not go to plan and he did not have the success he had hoped for.
He returned to Ireland were he began to create some of his best works and when 'Gulliver's Travels' was published it immediately became a massive hit. The book sold quicker than anticipated and this led to illegal copies being printed in Ireland to meet demand. Swift had written one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time.
